Hailing from the Bay Area, in California, Troubled Coast has started off the year with a bang in hardcore music. After two decent EPs and a passable full length, Letters, the group has proven their worth with their latest release, and first on Pure Noise Records, I’ve Been Thinking About Leaving You. The EP features a traditional hardcore sound, while bringing many different elements into their vocal approaches.

I’ve Been Thinking About Leaving You starts off with “Patient Hands,” an adequate introduction to Troubled Coast, for those unfamiliar with the band. The song shows off the band’s modern day hardcore sound, while also displaying the group’s clean vocals, an aspect that is not often used in like-sounding bands such as Defeater and Touché Amoré. “Patient Hands” also greatly benefits from guest vocals, courtesy of Matt Vincent (from labelmates The American Scene), whose voice adds a great contrast to the group’s harsh vocals. “I’m Still A Loner, Dottie” provides a more spoken, rather than screamed, approach to the vocals, while remaining heavy musically, a style that works greatly in Troubled Coast’s favor. On “La Jetee,” the clean vocals come across too forced. While Mile’s scream/yell sounds fantastic, and the opening bass line is one of the musical highlights on the EP, the track is by far the weakest link on I’ve Been Thinking About Leaving You. The EP’s six minute closer, “The First Night of the New World,” expands on the spoken style of “I’m Still A Loner, Dottie,” overtop of the strongest musicianship the group has presented, to date, led by Troubled Coast’s powerful guitar work.

Fans of the latest wave of hardcore bands will surely find something to appreciate in Troubled Coast. Whether it is the aggressive musicianship or the desperate sound in the multiple voices heard on the EP, Troubled Coast has proven their place in their scene with this release. After I’ve Been Thinking About Leaving You, it’s hard to deny that Troubled Coast will be one of the most talked about new comers in the hardcore scene this year.

Tracklist:

1. Patient Hands
2. I’m Still A Loner, Dottie
3. La Jetee
4. The First Night of the New World

Rating: 7.5/10

Let’s face it, being in a band is hard work. From the struggles of promoting your music, booking gigs, growing a fan base, dealing with broken-down vans, equipment, relationships, etc about the only thing harder for a band is making money. To make matters worse everyone from club owners, record labels, merch companies and online storefronts taking their cut there can sometime be nothing left. Luckily Storenvy has stepped up to the plate to help bands sell their merchandise online, completely FREE. And yes we mean free. Hopefully putting a few more dollars in the pockets of hard working bands.

So why should your band have a Storenvy storefront?

1. Completely Customizable Storefront

Storenvy allows bands the ability to setup a completely customized storefront. Immediately after signing up you have access to making your storefront look exactly how you want it to.
2. Quick and Painless Setup

Literally if you can check email you will be able to setup an online store in no time. When Storenvy was created the goal was to make setting up a custom store as quick and painless as humanly possible. With just a few clicks you can upload a picture of your band to the header, change the background color or image and just have fun messing around with all the color schemes that are possible. None of this requires any knowledge of how to setup a website or storefront.

3. Features

Unlimited amount of products

Up to five images per product

Incredibly easy inventory tracking

Friendly admin panel

Ability to offer discount codes to customers

Easily link to your Twitter & Facebook pages

4. Facebook Store

With just a few clicks you put a store right on your Facebook page! After all why make your fans work to buy your products, bring your products to where your fans already are! Setting up a storefront on your Facebook page has never been easier.

Storenvy also prides itself on being a “social marketplace”. When you sign up for a store your products are also automatically added to the Storenvy marketplace. 15% of all sales on Storenvy occur directly through customers browsing through all the awesome products and stores on the Storenvy Marketplace page.

Split records are a great thing. For the bands, it is a great way to work even closer with your fellow bands, while for fans, it is a great way to familiarize yourself with a band that one of your favourite bands thought were good enough to work with. 2011 has already been a great year for split record, with bands like Such Gold, I Call Fives, La Dispute, and more all putting out splits. As the year comes closer to its end, we are treated to another split, this time from Handguns of Harrisburg, PA, and Forever Came Calling, from Twentynine Palms, CA. Each band has contributed three songs each, and this split is sure to get these up and coming pop-punk acts’ names out there.

On Handguns half of the split, the group picks up right where they left off on Don’t Bite Your Tongue. What you’ll find are catchy pop punk tunes that you can’t help but sing along with the second time around. Between the three tracks, vocalist Taylor Eby sings at least one line that anyone listening can relate to. The minute-and-a-half long “Swallowing Knives” will surely become a fan favorite at the band’s live shows. With its fast paced musicianship and angsty lyrics, there is no way the song won’t set the crowd off.

Forever Came Calling, a band I was previously unfamiliar with, nailed their half of the split. Coming in at just over 5 minutes, their three tracks mesh incredibly well. Playing a faster brand of pop-punk than Handguns, it is expected that their songs be faster, shorter, and more aggressive. The 52 second “Contrition” works as the perfect transition between “Knott Sky Or Luckie?” and “Front Porch Sunrise.” It is once the listener hits “Front Porch Sunrise” that they are treated the highlight of both sides of this split. Led in by vocalist/guitarist Joe Candelaria’s vocals, the track matches the catchiness of Handguns’ three tracks, while infusing it with the more aggressive nature of the band’s own music. There is no way that kids won’t be screaming “What’s it like to be happy, honestly happy, and say all the things that you know that you’re thinking,” back at Candelaria in a live setting.

Handguns and Forever Came Calling have put out an excellent piece of work together. Every song seems designed to get a crowd pumped up in a live setting. I can say with certainty that Handguns released some of their best work on their half of the split, while Forever Came Calling got me interested enough to go back and check out their previous work. Both bands accomplished something great with their new tracks, and hopefully this is just a taste of what is coming next from each band.

Tracklist:

Side A
1. Smoke and Mirrors
2. Swallowing Knives
3. Where Are You?

Side B
1. Knott Sky or Luckie?
2. Contrition
3. Front Porch Sunrise

On October 4th, we received a new album from another one of Rise’s new signees, deemed the “WTF” signing. This time around, the new album was Boston, Massachusetts’ Transit. After two full-lengths and a couple EPs, Transit decided to switch up their sound for 2011. While their older material was fairly standard pop-punk, their most recent works have leaned much more to an emo sound, or “post-pop-punk”, a term coined by some on online forums. The first tastes of this sound came from Indoor Voices, and the Record Store Day 7”, Promise Nothing. Now Transit are back with their third full length, Listen & Forgive, and a full dosage of their new found identity.

From the very first moments of the opening track, “You Can’t Miss It (It’s Everywhere)”, it is obvious that Transit are no longer a pop-punk band. “Long Lost Friends”, the first single from the album, is the best piece of music Transit has released so far. With Joe Boynton’s angsty lyrics, and the rest of the groups new found musicianship, the track is the perfect representation of the “new” Transit. “All Your Heart” shines due to a guest spot from Fall Out Boy vocalist turned pop solo act, Patrick Stump. As Joe B. calls out music critics for their “cynicism”, the listener can’t help but sing along to one of the catchiest choruses the band has written. Not to mention the wonderful treat that it is to hear Stump sing over rock music once again.

Some listeners may remember “Cutting Corners” from the studio session videos leading up to the release of Listen & Forgive. The previously heard second of the track teased at what is one of the most essential tracks from the album. More of Joe B.’s great lyrics, matched with the semi-acoustic nature of the song make for a pleasant listen. As the album approaches its end, we are treated to a re-recording of “1978”, the original version being from Something Left Behind. Although the new version doesn’t have the aggression heard in its original form, the re-recording work perfectly on Listen & Forgive, and ultimately sounds much better than that from Something Left Behind.

It is very obvious that Transit took some different influences on Listen & Forgive than they did on previous albums. Guitarists Tim Landers and Torre Cioffi’s American Football inspired guitar work make Joe B.’s vocals fit into Transit’s music more than they ever have before. Sure we will all remember song like “Please, Head North” and “Stay Home”, but Listen & Forgive will be Transit’s defining album, without a doubt.

Listen & Forgive is available now via Rise Records.

Tracklist:
1. You Can’t Miss It (It’s Everywhere)

It’s not very often that an album is released that can really “wow” people. But on occasion, there is that one mind blowing album, something fresh, something new. This year, that album is presented to us by No Sleep Records’ Aficionado. Their debut self-titled full length is one of the most impressive albums of 2011. There is a ton of experimentation on the album, but it still maintains a catchy aspect to it, and that’s what makes it such a great album.

The band is one of the few seven pieces that utilize all members to their full capacity. The album is lead by frontman Nick Warchol’s vocals, which on occasion bear an Adam Lazzara-esque sound. Tracks like the opening duo “The Things You Like” and “Stir Like Hell” show off how great his voice works over the style of experimental-indie-punk instrumentation the remaining members of the group create.

But don’t assume Warchol’s voice is the only thing that carries this album. The brightest moments are actually in the musicianship. Flautist/vocalist Laura Carrozza demonstrates how much the flute can bring to a song on “Everything Was Right”. Not only does she steal the show on the track, Carrozza may have in fact performed the best piece of music Aficionado has ever written. “Confidence Is Intimidating” allows guitarists James Kehoe and Christopher Tenerowicz to show off their skill at it’s best, especially in the outro.

“Honesty” benefits greatly from the guest spot by Travis Shettel (TS and The Past Haunts, ex-Piebald). His vocals make the song one of the many bright spots on Aficionado, and add to what is probably the catchiest song on the album. The group slow down their near schizophrenic sound on “Permanent”. While the song doesn’t have the energy of the previous tracks, it’s still a powerful track. It’s during this song that keyboardist Craig Dutra is at his best. The keys are the most essential part of the song, and work greatly with Warchol’s vocals over them. One of the other highlights of “Permanent ” is the lyric “And I remember hearing fables about a fountain to make us ageless / A phony sense of security and confidence / We are not permanent / And for a while I didn’t give a shit, and I wasn’t scared of anything / Yeah, being naive sure had it’s benefits”, which is the most relatable and one of the most honest lines on Aficionado.

The musicianship is truly excellent on this album. Aficionado are experimental, but it still has emotion. It doesn’t feel like the members are showing off. It doesn’t feel like a competition. Every aspect of the album is super cohesive. The occasional dual vocals between Warchol and Carrozza works great for each vocalist, but isn’t so used that it makes those moments even better. Simply put, Aficionado have released one of 2011′s best records.

Aficionado is available now on CD, vinyl, and digitally though No Sleep Records.

Tracklist:

1. The Things You Like
2. Stir Like Hell
3. Everything Was Right
4. Grandfather
5. Confidence Is Intimidating
6. Honesty
7. Falsified Inspiration
8. Permanent
9. Characters
10. Open Doors

For fans of: Cursive, I guess. It’s super unique and you should just listen to it.

Rating: 9/10

Exclusive interview with guitarist, Jim Hocking from For The Fallen Dreams.

Today, I had the opportunity to have a talk with For The Fallen Dreams guitarist Jim Hocking about their new album, “Back Burner”, which dropped today, May 24th from Rise Records. He provided some awesome insight to the band, as well as information their new record (“Back Burner”). Read below to see what all Jim had to say…

First off, Jim, I want to thank you for taking some time out of your busy tour life to talk to me. Why don’t you tell us more about yourself and what do you for “For The Fallen Dreams” (FTFD)? Where are you from?

I play guitar and co-write the music for the band. I was born and raised in Charlotte, MI, a small suburb outside of the capital city, Lansing.

What is the current lineup for the band? I know there has been quite a few changes since the release of “Relentless” in 2009. Is this lineup just a “tour lineup” or is it official?

The current line-up stands as Dylan – Vocals, Kalan and me (Jim) – Guitar, Jordan – Bass and Arvin – Drums. This line-up is actually the MOST official we have had in a long time. After losing some core members following the release of Relentless, we took a step back and had friends fill in.

You guys just dropped the album “Back Burner” today via Rise Records, how does it feel?

It feels great! I woke up in the van on the way to our show in Des Moines, saw the date on my phone and felt a weight lift from my shoulders.

Readers, please support music and go buy the hard copy or purchase off iTunes. Its not about the money (that we won’t see from record sales anyway), its about the units sold!!! The industry pays close attention to these things!

What is your favorite song, personally, on the new record and why?

That is a very difficult question. I might say I have a few favorites for different reasons. Deep Down Inside is one of them. The song structure and chorus are just appealing to me, also hard-hitting. Bottom Feeders is a favorite for the fact that its our softest song to date…something I have always wanted to do. We really wanted to show every side and influence of the band on this record and I feel we did. Another song I’m really into is Fist Fight. The intro to the song is sick, and its just a pissed song all the way through.

What role do you play in the studio?

Kalan and I threw the guitar back and forth recording parts or changing things up. Its an all-over process. You never really doing EXACTLY what you plan on doing day by day. If we weren’t feeling a song one day we wouldn’t force it. We would go down the list and find one that grabbed us.

What was a typical day like in the studio?

The band would wake up early every day…like a real job haha…get into the studio around 9 with our coffees and breakfast, and discuss the plans for the day before diving in. Things were really easy-going while at Tom’s studio. We became pretty good friends, so when we weren’t tracking we were messing around or talking shit to each other haha.

Where did you guys record?

Diamond Studios in Ocala, FL with Tom Denney.

Are there any guest appearance on this album? I know “Relentless” had featured Jeremy McKinnon of “A Day to Remember”.

Mike Duce from Lower Than Atlantis sings on “Yellow”. We are all very happy with how this turned out. FTFD and LTA toured Europe and the UK together in December 2010, where we became good friends, as well as huge fans of LTA. Their albums Far Q and World Record are on regular rotation in the van. They were touring the U.S. for their first time while we were in the studio and happened to be passing through Ocala. We stopped them and dragged Mike into the studio, bribing him with a bottle of gin haha. It was a great time, as it always is. Miss those dudes!!! Check them out if you haven’t already.

Which do you prefer, studio life or tour life?

Tough question! They are very different. Studio life was almost like I moved to Ocala and made a bunch of new friends. We were always partying at our friend Andy’s house after we would leave the studio. It was nice to be comfortable in one spot for so long. Tour life is just so constant that sometimes you feel like you’re in the same place everyday…that may be because I’m going on 7 years of travel.

Where can everyone purchase “Back Burner”?

Hot Topic, Best Buy, FYE, iTunes, Rise Records, MerchNow, Merch Connection, among a slew of other online sites.

You guys are going on the road to Europe soon with Bury Your Dead, right? Are you stoked on that?

Absolutely. We have toured with BYD a few times in the past, never with Matt Bruso on vocals, but it was always a good time. (Except the time I watched them flip their van 5 times across an interstate).

Who was the best lineup for a tour that you ever were apart of?

Too difficult to say!!! I usually get close with a few people on every tour, and get along with everyone else.

How does Rise Records and FTFD match up? There has always been a bit of controversy on the line up that Rise Records has and who they should keep/recruit.

Craig hit us up in the summer of 2007 with a message saying he really liked the music and wanted to sign us. We were ecstatic. I don’t care what controversy there is around the label and it’s bands. Rise has been on the ups over the past few years and is a very successful label. I am stoked for Craig and the exponential increase in album sales he and his bands have accomplished. That’s a tough thing to do these days in this industry.

What do you see for the future of FTFD?

It’s looking bright right now, as it always does to me. Being a founding member I have always kept my head held high. The positive outlook has kept this band alive.

So, I got to ask, what is the deal with you guys and Legend, specifically with ex-FTFD vocalist Chad Ruhlig? Is there any “real” beef there or is it more a joke between you guys?

OHHHH YEAH, THEY BETTER WATCH THEIR BACKS…no. There is no beef. We love those dudes. We did a tour last summer that was supposed to be named “Squash the Beef”, but it was renamed. Chad and everyone else are still great friends of ours. Go pick up their new album, “The Pale Horse”!

Again, thanks so much for talking with me. The album is a huge success and I think you guys should be very proud of all your hard work. Anything else you would like to mention or say?

Thanks to everyone that has supported us in the past and present, and to those that never gave up on us. You mean the world to us and we are grateful for the opportunities you (the fans) have presented us with. We hope you pick up a copy of BACK BURNER and come see us at a show! See you soon, world.

This isn’t your average Rise Records band; Legend.

Hold your breath, grab onto your chair and be ready to be blown away. Today, May 17th, Legend (Michigan) released their second album titled “The Pale Horse” via Rise Records. The album is a true progression from their debut album, “Valediction”. This metalcore band, started by frontman Chad Ruhlig (ex For The Fallen Dreams vocalist), has really put everything into this new album to show they’re no longer a starter band on Rise Records. The passion, aggression, and flow of the album will leave you breathless. The album flows from start to finish with consistent heavy guitars, in-your-face vocals, precision drums, and heart pounding bass. When you listen to every track on “The Pale Horse”, you can tell that Legend really poured their hearts into this album, and not only pushed their own limits but the limits of metalcore. The album’s track, “Numbers” also features a guest vocal part from artist Myke Terry (ex Bury Your Dead vocalist).

When I saw them live after their release of “Valediction”, I can tell you they also know how to play live. The passion and energy you’ll observe with their performance will make you love this band even more. Be sure to check them out live, they are currently on tour with Attila, In the Midst of Lions,This Romantic Tragedy, and Miracle At St. Anna.

Overall, I would give this album a perfect 5 out 5. It was nothing shy of a strong, powerful, and aggresive metalcore album. Want to be the judge? …Be sure to check out the album in its entirely below (full album stream provided by the Rise Records YouTube).

Music is more important to me now than it ever was in my twenty’s. I am about to be 40 years old!! In my twenties and early thirties, I was consumed by sports, T.V. and other pointless means of entertainment. In hindsight, it was all a distraction from what was really going on in the world. While reading Steven Pressfield’s “The War of Art”, I was reminded that we are hard-wired to function as a clan or group. This ideal seems to be lost in our society, we are reminded to find our individuality through the ownership of things. Every aspect of our society serves as a mechanism for separation i.e.; politics, religion, sports, war, class and even clothing. Music can be the bridge between these inherent divisions.

The 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival was an opportunity to revisit those evolutionary instincts. There were so many like-minded people, and the energy was intoxicating. No, I was not high or drunk, but I think that everyone checked their egos at the main gate. The collective energy was flowing and giving us a small taste of the power of music. The soothing vibration of the beats and guitar licks seemed to satisfy my primal need for connection to my fellow humans. It also seems to free up stagnant electric energy throughout the body and definitely serves as a form of therapy for me. That is what music in general and the festival experience mean to me.

There were many highlights of this event, but the set by Pearl Jam left an unforgettable burn on my pleasure sensors. With the exception of moving forward little bits at a time, we stood in the same spot for nearly six hours. It was muddy, we were barefoot, and that added a certain feeling of connection to mother earth. Eddie Vedder addressed the crowd at the beginning of the set and said, “I’m not leaving until I’m f—in muddy!” Yeah right, he wouldn’t dare! To my surprise at the end of their set, he came down from the stage and ran up the center toward the sound booth, then back to the opposite side of the stage. He did a mudslide at some point and we were in awe at the live video from the big screen. He was running toward our side of the stage and we were about 10 feet from the barrier. My heart was racing, a magnificent surge of bodies moved toward the stage in an attempt to touch him as he went by. He was muddy and had a child-like grin from ear to ear as if to say, “I’m one of you.” I will never forget that moment.

Would I do it again? Did it the next year! If the love of a Chick-Avo doesn’t creep up on you, then the love of music will with 8 stages, 100+ plus bands in 3 glorious days of ACLMF. The Chick-Avo from The Mighty Cone vendor comes in a cone and layered, a ¼ of Avocado(deep fried), Chicken Breast(deep fried), and coleslaw on the bottom with a drizzle of sauce to top it off. Don’t miss the chance to get out amongst em’, put the ACLMF on your bucket list. If you don’t have a bucket list, start with a Dixie cup.

Hip scene darlings and Chicago local all star group IFD or I Fight Dragons for the uninitiated have created something that i personally think is going to revolutionize the market place going forward. I loved them the first time i caught a glimpse of the hero clad shirts and nintendo on stage and IATT had the pleasure of being on the same event at I Am Fest at the congress(remember that?).

IFD has always put their music first and this is no exception you can get their EP Cool is just a number for FREEZ by simply joining their mailing list; now i know a ton of you are going to say/think pish ah Beau, whats so original about that? well nothing but thats not why i present this article.

If you are already a member of their mailing list they have a very special treat for fans, i know we’re all hungover from the candy corn coma from Halloween but this is a tip you need to get on. For $100 and $5 shipping you can join the IFD club via USB. You get the flash drive with all their music they have released previously including the weezer cover we discussed on iatt.tv, but thats not all you will also have free access to all their future releases for free and to take it a step further you will be granted free access to all future shows for I Fight Dragons! think about it if you see them three times on average during the course of the year this thing has more than paid for itself and from their it only gets better. Lastly is supports an amazing band that just simply gets it!

Also check out the live video of “heads up hearts down” shot by yours truly at I Am Fest

An Horse is what you get when two bored co workers at one of the few remaining indie record stores in Brisbane Australia were working on their music rather than selling cds while the boss is away. Formed in July of 2007 An horse if a duo that found their namesake from an old sweater that a friend gave Kate Cooper(Vocals Guitar) a long time ago and not derived from the fact Damon Cox(Drums) was kicked by a goat, all though to put that into perspective what does that really have to do with a horse?

Rearrange Beds is the duo’s first album; and while all bands aspire to hit a home run in their first at bat, an horse just barely scarped the wall and will have to settle for a triple. In an age when Pretty Girls Make Graves have been laid to rest(pun intended), its refreshing to see someone pick up the quasi riot girl banner and run with it, but don’t let me or anyone just paint them into that corner, the lyrics and minimalistic approach to song writing lead to a refreshing sound these ears haven’t heard in sometime add in some sardonic lyrics like “Like that good Hole album I can live through this” and your bound to find yourself smiling all through out the duration of this debut album.

After sharing stages across Australia with the likes of Tegan and Sarah and death cab for cutie; the duo has been making their way stateside and have recently appeared on the David Letterman show and at SXSW amongst other festivals.
