Disturbia have just dropped an absolutely mammoth and face-melting new Spring/Summer line that deserves some serious attention. The new line includes 15 new designs spread across both tees and vests as well as a custom backpack, wallet, art print and badge packs.

All designs look as killer as always featuring insane illustration, incredible design ideas and some great color choices. When your working with top artists in the game such as Godmachine, Drew Millward, James Callahan, Ken Taylor, Michele Boscagli, Matthew Skiff and Michael Shantz you know your line is going to be second to none.

Aside from some great looking tees I am loving the introduction of the Disturbia backpack and wallet. Both pieces are insanely cool and well executed.

If this line isn’t enough to get you going prepare yourself for Disturbia’s second drop that will happen around mid March, when they plan to release cut and sew garments. Which include our Drones jacket, Travis Bickle M65 jacket, and Lithium plaid shirt.

Check out the entire line at: www.disturbiaclothing.com

If you have been a frequent reader of Iamthetrend.com you probably know that Miles To Go is one of my favorite indie clothing lines, so of course with their new release their is some serious excitement on my end! That excitement is well warranted for their new release. The Spring release features 10 new products including five brand new designs and some re-works of old designs.

Miles To Go has always done a great job picking some of the best artists around to use for their designs and this release is no exception. This line brings us two designs from Keaton Henson, as well as designs from Godmachine, Dan Mummford and Dave Quiggle.

As with with all Miles To Go designs, each piece is carefully thought out and pertains to a story, poem, book or idea, this to me is what separates Miles To Go from many indie brands. The mere fact that they take the extra time to really put a lot of thought into what they produce really says a lot. Instead of just slapping some cool looking design on a shirt and calling it a day, you are wearing a piece of meaningful artwork.

Overall I absolutely love the new release. My favorite pieces are the Keaton Henson designs “The Invisible Man” and “Master and Margarita“, both of these tees expand on the “Miles To Go Look” and add a bit of diversity to the overall line and both designs look fantastic on American Apparel Tri-Blend Coffee.

All shirts are printed on American Apparel and shirts run a very fair $21.99. Aside from the tees, MTG has also added 18″ x 24″ silk screened posters of “Medusa” and “The Struggle” for $25.99.

Check out the full line at: www.milestogoclothing.com

Since I have started Iamthetrend.com Greg Kerr, the owner of Miles To Go has been an extremely standout guy and actually one of the first clothing brands to help me out sending me some tees to review and discuss, so of course he will always hold a special place in my heart! Well the tables have turned and it’s time that Greg needs our help.

Greg’s close friend Sarah (age 27) is badly suffering from a terrible condition known as Crohn’s Disease. She has been battling this illness for awhile and unfortunately her situation isn’t getting any better. In fact she is pretty much out of options for treatment at this point and her last hope is a extremely expensive drug called Cimzia, the expense of which is $4000 out of pocket.

Greg has decided to try and help raise money to help Sarah afford the medication that she needs. He is asking for any size donation, and to show his appreciation he will be donating coupon codes of various sizes that correspond to donation amounts.

$5-10 = 25% off coupon
$11-20 = 30 % off coupon
$21-50 = 40% off coupon
$51-100 = 50% off coupon
$100+ = 50% off coupon and your pick of any single item in the store for free(includes hoodies, posters, etc)

For only a small donation you can help a great cause and get a great deal on some killer Miles to Go clothing!

All you need to do to donate is visit: http://milestogoclothing.com/ and click the DONATE button on the front page!

Aside from all that Miles to Go is releasing 5 new designs on April 15th! He has pulled out some heavy hitters for this line including Keaton Henson, Godmachine, Dan Mumford and Dave Quiggle! I have posted a few preview shots of the line above!!

Great Britain based,You’re History have just launched their first release featuring four designs from the one and only Godmachine! I must say starting out your entire line based on designs by Godmachine is a pretty good way to get your name out there and guarantee yourself some pretty sick tee designs, after all your tees are only as good as the art that is on them.

I also love the fact that all of You’re History’s designs are indeed tied into historical figures and events, honestly history never looked this good! The first four designs feature Jack the Ripper, Cleopatra, Grigori Rasputin and Robin Hood, with obviously Robin Hood being the only fictional character in the bunch.

The inherit problem with having your entire line designed by one person, especially an artist that is very recognizable in this genre of tees and also is a very sought after artist is that your brand suffers the risk of looking similar to other brands out there. You’re History definitely reminds me of brands such as Zombie Liquorice, Shred and even Miles to Go but with a historical twist. As much as I love the historical references and spin on the brand I’m not sure if it will be enough to make the brand standout from the rest of the pack. Either way I think You’re History has come out of the gates swinging and in the process have released some very cool looking tees and we wish them all the best.

As far as the tees go all tees are printed on American Apparel and come complete with a custom neck tag and back print and run £16 or roughly $24, but if you use coupon code “FROMHELL” for 18.88% off your order from now until Friday at Midnight!

Check out the full release and pick up some tees at: www.weareallhistory.com

Matthew Skiff is one of the most respected artists in the t-shirt game, working for companies such as Disturbia, Zombie Liquorice, Randr, The Printed Mind, 410BC, Pyknic, the list goes on and on. He is one of those artists that is able to pull off several different styles and do a great job doing it. We had a chance to ask him some questions to see what exactly makes this artist who he is.

Could you start out by telling us a little background on yourself? (Name, Age, Location, the basics!)

My name is Matthew Skiff and I was born in raised in Colorado. I’m currently 23 years old, but am creeping up on my 24th birthday on St. Patrick’s Day.

When did you first realize you had a passion for art and what drew you to it?

It was a long long time ago. We I was a kid, I was raised on cartoons and people that grew up when I did had (arguably) the best cartoons. Every morning before I would go to school, I would watch a couple hours of cartoons, then when I would get home from school I would watch a couple of hours of cartoons, and then of course there was Saturday morning cartoons, and then Nickelodeon , the Cartoon Network…even the Disney Channel always had good stuff on during the weekends. It’s safe to say I was raised on cartoons…and while watching cartoons I would usually have a pad of paper and a pencil, and I would draw the characters I saw on TV. I was really into comic books as a kid as well, and when I was a kid, the only thing I wanted to do was be a comic book artist.

Did you get a formal training in art and if so how do you think it shaped you as an artist?

I didn’t really get that much formal training. I mean, there was always art classes in school that I took, but it was all formal art training and nothing really that I wanted to do. Even in college, I took a few drawing classes but it was still very formal…all these boring still life drawings, that while beneficial, wasn’t something I really had that much interest in. I took a ton of computer graphics and graphic design classes in College as well that helped me become more familiar with the various computer programs I use today. But i really think that the drawing I did outside of school has helped me out a lot. I have stacks and stacks of drawings in storage somewhere….it would be very interesting to go back and look at those sometime soon…

Like any great artist you have a very recognizable style. Did you stumble across your stylistic approach or was it something that you set out for?

Like i stated earlier….cartoons and comic books really drove the direction my art is right now. It’s all an emphasis on “line” mainly, and keeping things simple and clean, but detailed as well (if that makes any sense). I don’t really think about it when I draw things, however different subject matter does require different variations on the simple vs. detailed idea.

What have been some of your favorite projects that you have worked on?

There are so many fun t-shirt projects that I have worked on, however I am now getting into a lot of different things as well. I just finished up a skateboard series for a small company in Greece that I had a blast working on. I am about to start some snowboards that I am incredibly excited about. When I first started out doing the kind of thing I’m doing now…my ultimate goal was to eventually end up doing snowboards, and now that I am finally able to…I feel incredibly fortunate. I have been able to do so many awesome designs and work with so many amazing people/bands/companies in the very short time that I have been doing this…I wouldn’t even have thought this would be possible if you told me this when I graduated college.

I eventually want to kind of break a way a bit from what I usually do. Maybe start something of my own or even get into clothing design or something different than just illustration.

What is the most rewarding part of being an artist?

The final result is the most rewarding thing to me. Getting to it is a long process that I almost dread every single time I start a design. Once the final result is there…it hopefully looks good, and I am just happy that it is finally finished. It’s also good to know that the client is happy with it, and I guess in the line of work I do…that’s the only thing that matters. I do get a bit frustrated when I have to change so many things after (in my mind) it’s finished, but that is just the nature of the beast. I complain sometimes about it, but that fact is…I get to do thisevery single day. I eventually want to get back into more personal art, but it seems that every time I think I’ll get a break in my schedule, it fills up.

Do you have to be in a particular mood when you create or can you just create whenever/wherever?

I wouldn’t say a particular mood, however I have to be well rested. I’m not the kind of person who can get 5 hours of sleep…wake up and immediately start drawing. I need a lot of sleep and then even when I wake up, it takes me quite a while to prepare myself for the days work. I need to sit and maybe watch a bit of TV, surf the internet and then eventually answer e-mails and start work. I’d love to be the person who could wake up early and immediately start work…I’d get so much more done! However, that’s just not who I am, although I am working (not very hard) to change that…we’ll see if I can!

Who are some artist that you have looked up to over the years?

Gosh, there are so many. I did a blog post a few months ago where I talked about a lot of my influences growing up (outside the t-shirt/merch world) (http://www.ithew.com/2009/12/influcences-and-inspiration/). But then there is people that I have become familiar with in the recent years that do what I do (but so much better). Brandon Heart is the one I look up to the most, not really for he’s t-shirt stuff, but the stuff he does for Soup Graphix…mainly his skateboard designs. I have been a fan of his for years without really knowing it until I found out who he was. There are others too that I have become fans of and that have been very helpful to me, people like Godmachine and Jimiyo.

What would be one word that describes you?

Loser

What is your favorite season?

This is a hard question. I love snowboarding so naturally I want to say winter, and here in Colorado we have some pretty good winter’s. However the past year I haven’t been able to go snowboard, so the cold and snow is just annoying to me. Right now I would have to say the fall, I love seeing the leaves change and there is just a certain feeling the fall has. And Halloween is in the fall, I always am a little bit sad when the Month of October is over and all the tv stations stop showing horror movies or Halloween specials.

Where do you spend most of your time on the web?

Facebook and Twitter occupy most of my time. I do head over to IGN sometimes to check out movie and video game news. WWTDD is another place I frequent…I have to keep up with my celebrity gossip!

If someone wanted to contact and hire you, are you available and how would the do so?

Yes I am available for work, but there will be a bit of a wait. The best way to contact me is through e-mail (matthewskiff [AT]gmail.com)

Yes you read that title correctly! The awesome guys over at Storenvy are kicking off the new year in a big way, by giving away 500 FREE TEES! The tee was designed by the infamous GODMACHINE, whom which they told basically to go crazy and make it as difficult to print as possible. What resulted is a ten color intricate masterpiece! This shirt shows off the incredible Storenvy printing quality and of course how incredible of an illustrator Godmachine is.

Here are all the details straight from Storenvy :
Storenvy wants to give YOU a FREE shirt (designed by Godmachine)

2009 was 1 heck of a year for Storenvy Printing and we are not slowing down in 2010.
Our printing department went from a staff of only 9 people to now 35 in only 6 months. In February we are moving into our new 26,000 square foot facility with 2 new autos on the way and 1 more coming shortly afterwards. That would bring us up to 8 total machines. With plenty room to grow!

So..

We are giving you a FREE tshirt designed by the great Godmachine to the first 500 people that contact us.
We had him design this shirt for you, told him to just go crazy. So he came up with this 10 color beast of beauty.
We are printing this on an American Apparel 2001 tee with a custom screen printed tag.

The only thing you need to qualify to get a free t-shirt is be able to say yes to 1 of the below.

1. Run or work for a Clothing Company.
2. Be in a band or work with bands (label, manager, booking agent, etc)
3. Be a graphic designer that designs t-shirts
4. Run some type of website that has to do with t-shirts, music, or the arts.
5. Work for some type of company that would need tshirts printed at some point.

If you are not 1 of the above just tell us why we should give you a tshirt and we will probably do so.

(insert design here)

This is what you need to do to get your free t-shirt.

email me at printing@storenvy.com with the subject “Give me my free tshirt” and include the following information.

1. your name
2. email
3. your tshirt size
4. the company you work for (if there is one)
5. website url
6. Your Address!

We will start shipping these out in late January or early February.

Enjoy!

I hope this isn’t to late but I wanted to throw out my favorite Clothing Companies, Bands, Artists and Products of the year! It was extremely tough to just pick 5 for each category, but after much debate with myself I narrowed my list down. So here it is my top 5 of each IATT Category!

Clothing

:

Electric Zombie

The Electric Zombie Winter Release was by far my favorite EZ Release to date. Honestly if I were to start a clothing company it would have looked much like that latest release!

Ugmonk

Jeff has done an incredible job since day one with his company. I love how simplistic yet effective his designs are.

Miles to Go

Miles to Go was another company that I liked from the minute I checked out their site. They have extremely well thought designs and inspirations behind their shirts. Greg really does a fantastic job making sure his brand has purpose and meaning.

Stheart

Stheart was a company that first caught my eye with their incredible photography. There are very few companies that have product shots better than these guys. They also do a great job of balancing very simple designs and very loud designs. Plus their new line looks amazing!

Glamour Kills

This year Glamour Kills has done a great job from expanding past just being a T-shirt line and into a full-fledged clothing company. The addition of cut and sew pieces as well as a bit more muted down look really won me over this year.

Music:

The Devil Wears Prada – With Roots Above

A absolutely crushing release. From incredible breakdowns to amazing clean vocals this disc had it all and it was all done incredibly well.

Silversun Pickups – Swoon

I have to be honest at first I did not dig their new disc, but like most of my favorite CDs it wore on me and I warmed up to it.

A Day To Remember – Homesick

Since the start ADTR has continually pushed and blurred the boundaries between pop and metal and with Homesick they might have reached the limit. They might own some of the biggest hooks of any band that could pull of a wall of death.

Everytime I Die – New Junk Aesthetic

The first time I heard the song “Wanerlust” I couldn’t help but smile. ETID have really carved themselves a niche in the southern rock/metalcore genre. They just have such a recognizable style and flavor to their music I cant help but love them!

The Dear Hunter – Act III Life and Death

Casey Crescenzo is a genius. How he writes songs of the complexity and magnitude of all three Dear Hunter albums just blows me away. How one person can have that much talent is just crazy! Although this isnt my favorite Dear Hunter record (Act II is) it still ranked in my top 5 this year.

Artists/Tee Designers:

This was honestly the toughest category for me to only pick 5 from. There are just so many incredible artists out there that this list could have been a mile long. I tried to pick 5 artist that all represented slightly different styles. I am not going to go into why each one of the rocks because it should be pretty obvious!

Godmachine

Jeremy Shantz

So this week I got the chance to pick the brain of Greg Kerr the owner of Miles To Go Clothing and Miles to Go Belts. Miles to Go has been one of my favorite indie brands since I came across them about a year ago. They continually put out quality products, always hiring the best designers in the biz, as well as using top quality materials for their products. In this interview we got to discuss how Miles to Go got started, his inspiration for designs and Greg even offers up some advice to upstart labels.

So could you start about by telling us a bit about how Miles To Go go started?

I was working at a print shop in phoenix, acme prints, and had access to tons of print equipment after hours. i had been debating doing tees for a while because like most people, i really didn’t like the options out there for shirts. i rarely did or do ever buy graphic tees in stores. so, i whipped up some really basic designs, printed a few and just kind of eased into it all.

Very cool! So how long ago was that?

I think i stared about 2 years ago and i did the designs myself, mostly bad images taken from things, like marlon brando or some other simple, classic look. i really wasnt sure if i had intentions of really doing a line or not initially.

So when did you decide to take Miles To Go to the next level hiring out artists and really making the brand what it is today?

I started selling in phoenix at first fridays which is an art walk through downtown and they’d let you set up a table and hustle on the street corners. i had maybe 4-5 designs and was getting a good response and doing well enough to have more funding. i think my first commissioned piece was for my cost of ideas shirt from dave quiggle. i really dug his work and used t be a fan of his old hardcore band, disciple, so i really wanted to work with him. i knew i couldnt execute what i saw in my head and after realizing the possibilities of what a real professional could do i got hooked. i knew from the beginning, with naming the company after a robert frost poem i really wanted to keep the designs based off of literature as my theme. it may be nerdy but its what im into.

While we are on the subject of how you got your name I would really like to talk about your inspirations for your designs. I absolutely love that almost all your pieces are based off of poems, artists and figureheads. How did you come up with this idea and could you ellaborate on this?

Ive always been a heavy reader and luckily my pool to gather ideas from is huge. i really like my designs to be about something specific and i even try to put quotes relating to the pieces in the item write ups. so far ive basically been getting designs based off of books ive always loved and that list is endless. after i got the artwork for the guy on fire, based off of fahrenheit 451 i realized how the theme could work and would be a great launching pad for ideas. when the artwork got sent over it had my name in it and i thought it took away from the art and since then, i always tell artists they dont need to put miles to go into it unless it somehow works well into the design. im a bit older and dont want to wear tees with names all over it and i hope other people get that im focused on the art work more so than in your face branding.

I really think this says a lot about your brand and the idea of branding. To me it seems like a lot of upstart lines dont really have a focus or brand indentity. Do you have any advice for the upstarts out there?

As most people that have been in this field for a while(2 yrs with shirts, 7 with belts) you really have to figure out what will set you apart and spend a lot of time before you go dropping money. your friends stop buying tees after the 1st or 2nd shirt and you need good products. i decided that miles to go is a passion project and as long as im having fun and not losing money i will keep doing it. i love commissioning artwork and never fight the cost. im helping support a fellow artist and i feel like a patron of the arts and own something amazing, created for me. some companies want to be in stores like pyknic from the get go and thats fine too. theyve done a great job but their goals were and are much different then mine. i flirted with retail for a bit and did a trade show which went well, but i liked the idea of bein more exclusive. maybe johnny cupcakes rubbed off on me a bit over the years.

So you mentioned your belt company. Could you give us a little insight as to what that is and what you do with Miles to Go Belts?

With miles to go belts im basically like a shirt printer but with a different medium, using belts. bands or clothing companies will order anywhere from 5 to 1000 belts for their store or shows, etc. its how i pay my bills and im very thankful thats its been supporting me for years now. i just sort of stumbled upon the idea as a way to pay my rent while on tour. ive been very fortunate to work with great bands and inspiring people that keep me going and have taught me so much. im all word of mouth and its not a stuck up thing, its just that advertising hasnt done too much in the past. im fortunate that a lot of my customers are willing to give up who made their belts when asked.

Very cool! That seems to me like it would be a very competitive market

Merchandising in general is. thankfully i think im still the only person who does the kind of belts i make. the stuff i use is so tempermental is ridiculous but im used to using it by now. lots and lots of trial and error before it got going. the scene has changed so much though. my first big order i got from giving geoff from thursday a belt at our labels bbq one time and i could talk to people in bands because they did their own merch. now its all fulfillment companies and honestly, they dont seem to care quite as much and its a bit harder to get in touch with people about belts.

So lets get back to the shirts. You have worked with some incredible designers, Godmachine, Dan Mumford and Dave Quigle. What can we expect from you in the near future?

The future of miles to go is still up in the air. i fight with mysef daily about how many designs to do, blah blah. i have ideas for a few more new shirts and i hope to get the ball rolling on some soon. i dont do seasonal releases because im not catering to retail and when the artwork comes in, i pre-sale for 2 weeks and print. i love having a consistent look to my line and love the work ive gotten so far but i think the designs still vary enough to keep it interesting. i feel bad for those guys when i send over my briefs. i cant tell you how many times ive been told im very thorough with my ideas for a shirt. i send over as much detail as i can to help give an idea of colors, print size, anything to assist which hopefully isnt too annoying. Im sure most artists probably prefer that level of detail! Well we are really looking forward to what you put out next! also, some people have asked for logo shirts so i made two which will be up soon. i didnt print many, just putting them up for people into rocking brand names. im also doing a new version of the sirens which wont be limited and the colors will be different. i said i wouldnt reprint it but i really love the art and have to make more.

I also recently noticed that you have branched into kids size t-shirts. What was the though and inspiration behind this and do you expect on doing any designs aimed towards kids?

honestly, im going to be 30 in a few months and have a growing number of friends with kids who kept asking me to make tees. i grabbed some simple designs and printed them up and some people have been picking it up. one thing i didnt realize would happen was when i watched a little size 2 poison tree coming out of the dryer how much it made me melt with its overwhelming cuteness. i doubt ill make designs specifically for kids but i think its pretty sweet having a little kid with a shirt with a robert frost line on it…i have promises to keep.

Very cool! I love this idea and hope you continue to do a few more kids shirts. So before we go any , you said you were really into books. What are some must reads?

Oh, man. i love any vonnegut, palahniuk(except latest one), ayn rand, robert frost, poe, milton. my book shelf is taking up half of my room at this point. i recently finished atlas shrugged by ayn rand and its a really hard read but well worth it. i used to spend 45 mins on the train each way to school for years and no one talks so all i did was read read read. im also halfway through the god delusion by richard dawkins and its a great look at religion and atheism.
