Few groups combine brutality and technicality as successfully as Defeated Sanity do, and even fewer can keep it up for two decades while continually upping the ante and being a benchmark for quality within the genre. This German four-piece has been consistently improving and gaining steam over the past few full lengths and distinguishing themselves as something much more than the Disgorge and Suffocation clones that swamp the genre. They effortlessly blend hyper-speed death metal and jazz-fusion into a technical aural feast that never disintegrates into over-indulgence as so many of their peers do. This is more Suffocation than Necrophagist in that it’s just an unrelenting display of endurance and musical acrobatics not solely for the sake of showmanship. All of their tracks composition wise make sense and are technical on the low end of the fret board and behind the drum kit instead of the flashy drawn-out solos and sweep arpeggio riffs that plague so many of their death metal brethren.
Fans of the band and those familiar with their past works know what to expect here – frantic heavy guitar riffs, killer bass leads, a blistering drum performance and huge sludgy slam sections that hit like a freight train carrying ten-thousand tons of lead and dynamite. This is more of the same you’ve come to expect from Defeated Sanity ever since 2007’s Psalms of the Moribund, just a bit tighter and with more of modern production and even mix that allows each instrument to shine equally. There’s some serious groove to this record (similar to the sound that bands like Devourment and Disgorge popularized in the genre in the early 2000’s) making it rhythmically interesting while still managing to furiously brutal and fast in delivery. The only shortcoming of this record is lyrically it’s about as run of the mill as gets as far as brutal death metal goes – it’s all gore, dismemberment and blood, but that’s almost a requirement within this genre at this point so it’s hard to hold that against them.
Passages Into Deformity is another great chapter in Defeated Sanity’s long and consistent career. It’s 40 straight minutes of punishing guttural vocals, high velocity technical drumming, frenzied and endurance testing riffing and monstrous low end heaviness. It doesn’t transcend genre boundaries, it doesn’t do anything anything new, but what it does do it does so, so well. This is top quality stuff that proves once again why these German’s are still the reigning champs of the technical/brutal death metal underworld and show no signs of relinquishing the throne anytime soon.
